August 21, 2008 – (HOSTSEARCH.COM) – The Managing Director of UK web and IT hosting solutions provider Memset (http://www.memset.com), Ms. Kate Craig-Wood, will “jump Everest”, it was reported recently. According to reports, the jump, which will take place in October, is “the world’s first skydive over Mount Everest” and the 28 skydivers involved in the jump will land on the world’s “highest dropzone”. The skydivers will jump from 29,500ft and land at 12,350ft, a height “many skydives actually start from”. It will raise money for Computer Clubs for Girls (CC4G).
To facilitate the jump the skydivers will have parachutes that are three times bigger than standard parachutes and wear skydiving oxygen systems. The skydivers will also wear thermal jumpsuits and headgear as they expect to encounter temperatures of –40 degrees Celsius. In addition, the jump has been “precision scheduled to avoid the 200 mph jet stream that roars across Everest's summit”.
“I would like to hope that my involvement in this high profile activity will make more people aware of the issues facing women in IT,” explained Ms. Craig-Wood. “I’m committed to finding innovative ways of helping to attract girls into IT, and supporting CC4G is just one way we can help address the imbalance in the industry.”
CC4G is run by e-skills UK and supported by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES). The objective of the organization is to raise technology skills amongst girls “while transforming their attitudes to careers in IT”. Only 16% of British technology workers are female and the gender pay gap is 23% - one of the worst in any profession in the UK.
