Aplus.Net Protects Customers from Mydoom Computer Worm

January 28, 2004
San Diego, California –January 28, 2004 - Aplus.Net (www.aplus.net), a leading Internet presence provider to small and medium-sized businesses, announced today that they are successfully blocking the Mydoom worm from their customers mailboxes.

W32/Mydoom@mm, also known as Mydoom, Novarg and Worm.SCO.A, is a destructive worm that is spreading via e-mail as a binary attachment to make it appear as if the attachment is a text file.

"Aplus.Net implemented a superior virus and spam filter several months ago that detects and eliminates viruses before they ever enter our network,” said Ivan Vachovsky, chief executive officer of Aplus.Net. “We feel that this is a tremendous value-add for our customers because industry research has shown that many small businesses and home users don’t use or regularly update virus software.”

Virus experts have surmised that the author of the Mydoom virus may be a fan of the Linux open source community because the bug targets computers running Microsoft Windows and it launched a Denial of Service (DOS) attack on The SCO Group, Inc.’s Web site. The SCO Group has stated that they own the UNIX operating system and that some versions of the Linux operating system use its proprietary code.

“Our e-mail system processes millions of e-mails every day and 15% of our current e-mail traffic is infected with the Mydoom worm,” said John Martis, executive vice president of operations. “Our virus filters are eliminating practically all of this unwanted e-mail and preventing our customers from experiencing the aggravation and expense of downtime.”

Network security firms including Network Associates and Symantec have issued software updates to combat this worm.
