Backup Company Carbonite Buys EVault from Hard Drive Company Seagate
Backup company Carbonite has bought EVault from hard drive company Seagate. Seagate, which is more traditionally known for desktop storage and external hard drives, offers a range of services which extend to personal clouds and data recovery services. EVault is a division of Seagate which has been offering “cloud-connected backup and recovery services” to around “43,000 mid-market companies and enterprises” since 1997. The acquisition is intended to enhance Carbonite’s Disaster Recovery-as-a-Service (DRaaS) options.

Carbonite, which has corporate head quarters in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, offers a range of business and personal backup solutions including cloud and hybrid backup alongside recovery plans for home users and small and midsize businesses. The acquisition of EVault strengthens the company’s recovery options. The cost of the acquisition was reportedly $14 million in cash.

“With this acquisition, Carbonite is taking a big step forward in meeting the data protection and business continuity needs of the entire SMB market from home offices to medium-sized businesses,” suggested Carbonite’s President and CEO, Mohamad Ali in a press release. “EVault’s proven technology, which includes a line of highly scalable appliances and advanced disaster recovery as a service (DRaaS) capabilities, enables us to round out our portfolio and immediately provide the features and functionality larger businesses require to support their complex environments.”
