IBM - traditionally called Big Blue within the industry - has won a contract to provide cloud and IT services (including analytics, security and mobile infrastructure services) to pipeline company Columbia Pipeline Group Inc. The corporation, whose headquarters are in Armonk, New York, USA, is a globally recognized IT giant and one of the leaders in the cloud arena. Its five-year agreement with Columbia Pipeline is estimated to be worth in the region of $180 million.
Columbia Pipeline Group Inc. has headquarters in Houston, Texas, USA and is a 'spin off' company from NiSource Inc., a Fortune 500 company which is based in Merrillville, Indiana, USA. It is involved in natural gas transmission, storage and distribution. The separation of the company from its parent occurred July 1, 2015. NiSource was formerly a client of IBM's. Columbia Pipeline’s entire IT and business operations (human resources, pipeline operations and IT management) will be moved from NiSource’s datacenter to a private cloud infrastructure which will be provided through IBM's Columbus, Ohio datacenter in the United States.
Columbia Pipeline manages 15,000 miles of pipeline in the east of the United States and operates one the country's largest subterranean natural gas storage facilities. It also has a presence in the natural gas producing areas of Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York. The company will deploy IBM’s QRadar Security Intelligence Platform, which integrates event and log management, anomaly detection, incident forensics and security data. Its deal with IBM comes as a response to growth and gaining new customers in new markets. The company projects an increase in revenue from $4.6 billion in 2015 to around $13.5 billion over the next five years.
