Like Adobe's ColdFusion or NewAtlanta's BlueDragon Server JX, Open BlueDragon can process and interpret CFML code. The difference is that Open BlueDragon is 100% Open-Source, and 100% free to use for any purpose. OpenBD is released under the GPLv3 license.
Vivio Technologies believes that an open-source CFML engine like OpenBD will do nothing but help existing CFML developers as well as commercial CFML engines. We believe it will grow the CFML community as a whole by bringing in new developers who realize the simplicity and power of CFML. We believe open-source CFML to be a natural lead-in to commercial offerings like Adobe's ColdFusion Server for the benefits that only a propriatary offering could provide. Essentially, we believe OpenBD will help all of us, and if something can help everyone, we want to be a part of that.
OpenBD is very compatible with Adobe's CF7 and CF8. There are, of course, some differences that have to exist due to some proprietary code, and honestly, some of the benefits of commercial CFML servers are worth every penny you spend on them. OpenBD also has some very useful features that are unique to OpenBD and extremely helpful to developers.
As CFML Web Developers, you're often asked to "sell" the CFML server along with your CFML product or service. With OpenBD, the cost of the CFML server is no longer a limiting factor. If the product or service that you are developing in CFML requires features that are only available in Adobe's CF or other commercial engines, you'll only have to sell those features, rather then the language itself. This is a huge boon to the CFML community as it removes a barrier to both a language we love and to the productivity enhancements that CFML has always offered.
You can have OpenBD pre-installed on just about every hosting account we offer! Just select the VPS that you'd like to have it on (OpenBD will run nicely on all account types), and select OpenBD from the list of available CFML servers. It's easy! Each OpenBD installation comes with its own management interface, its own J2EE server (Tomcat) and no restrictions on tags. |
