Chinese Internet Provider Tencent Begins Trial of Qixing Data Center
Chinese Internet provider Tencent has begun a trial of its new Qixing data center. Tencent, which has headquarters in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China, was established in 1998. The company bills itself as a “leading provider of Internet value added services in China”. It provides several of China’s key Internet platforms including Weibo, WeChat, QQ Instant Messenger, QQ.com, QQ Games, Qzone, and Tenpay. Together its services have brought together “China's largest Internet community”. This is one of the company’s largest data centers to date and will hold Tencent’s key data.

The new green, energy efficient data center’s location is ideal for storing sensitive data. It has been built in caves and purpose-built tunnels in mountains in the Gui'an New Area. The facility’s leading-edge construction means that rather than staffing it in the usual fashion, Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology will oversee its day-to-day operation.

The size of the data center is 513,000 square meters, but there is an additional 30,000 square meters of tunnel area. The Gui'an New Area is generally a cold area and therefore provides natural cooling for the facility. Several other companies (including Alibaba, Foxconn and Apple) have data centers in the area.
