Cloud and Search Giant Google to Open New Alabama Data Center
After reaching a deal with the Tennessee Valley Authority, Google has announced it is to open a new data center in Alabama, USA. The company, globally recognized as a cloud and search giant, will open its new center in Widows Creek, Jackson County, Alabama. While its new site is a coal-powered power plant that has been earmarked for closure, Google has confirmed the new center will be 100% powered by renewable energy.

The Widows Creek data center will be Google's 14th dedicated data center. News of the site's development has been taken favorably by organizations that promote environmental issues, especially those that promote use of renewables. Google has excellent credentials as far as the environment is concerned. Around half of its data centers are driven using renewables and the corporation uses around 1.5% of the available wind power-generated energy in the United States.

"At Widows Creek, we can use the plants’ many electric transmission lines to bring in lots of renewable energy to power our new data center," explained the corporation's blog. Thanks to an arrangement with Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), our electric utility, we’ll be able to scout new renewable energy projects and work with TVA to bring the power onto their electrical grid. Ultimately, this contributes to our goal of being powered by 100% renewable energy."

Alongside Alabama, Google also has renewable energy powered centers in Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina, USA. It also has a commitment to 100% renewable power utilization in the future. In addition, alongside a tradition of using renewable energy, Google also likes renewable properties. The company recently revamped a former paper mill as a data center in Finland.
