Cloud Giant Alibaba Cloud Expands Data Center Capacity in Hong Kong
Cloud giant Alibaba Cloud has expanded its data center capacity in Hong Kong. Alibaba Cloud (also known as ‘AliCloud’ and ‘Aliyun’) is the cloud services arm of Chinese ecommerce company Alibaba. Under the leadership of Executive Chairman and founder Jack Ma, the company offers a wide range of compute, storage and hosting services alongside more advanced ‘Big Data’ solutions. According to a story in the South China Morning Post (SCMP) Alibaba Cloud has doubled its Hong Kong data center capacity.

Alibaba Cloud’s move is intended to meet increased demand for its data storage and processing services as Hong Kong island positions itself as a regional hub for cloud computing. The extended capacity will include disaster recovery solutions and analytics offerings. The move comes against a backdrop of the Hong Kong government offering “incentives and amended lease regulations” for those who convert industrial buildings into data centers.

“More companies have come to realise the importance of changing their traditional IT mindset to embrace the new data technology,” explained Ethan Yu, the Vice President of Alibaba Group and General Manager of Alibaba Cloud Global in the SCMP. “We are confident that the expanded data center facility, together with our scalable and secure cloud offering, will better meet the needs of the digital transformation in key local sectors such as hospitality and financial services”.
