Cloud Giant Alibaba to Open Indian Data Center
Cloud giant Alibaba Cloud (Alibaba), the cloud computing branch of the Alibaba Group, has announced its intention to open a new data center in India. Alibaba, also known as Aliyun, was established in 2009. The company has headquarters in Singapore and operates globally with services that extend to scalable cloud computing and data management platforms. Alibaba caters to around 2.8 million customers both in China and around the world. By opening a new data center in India the company will be able to offer its services to the large number of SMEs in the region.

News of Alibaba’s decision was announced at the recent Computing Conference held in Shanghai, China. The data center will be located in Mumbai, India and it is expected to open by the end of March, 2018. The news comes alongside the company’s decision to build a data center in Jakarta, Indonesia, and on the heels of its decision to open a data center in Malaysia. The three new data centers will bring Alibaba’s network of facilities outside China to 17 including a presence in Australia, Germany, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and the United States.

“I believe Alibaba Cloud, as the only global cloud services provider originating from Asia, is uniquely positioned with cultural and contextual advantages to provide innovative data intelligence and computing capabilities to customers in this region,” explained Alibaba’s President, Simon Hu. “Establishing data centers in India and Indonesia will further strengthen our position in the region and across the globe.”
