Cloud Giant Amazon Acquires Web Development Company Cloud9
Cloud giant Amazon has acquired web development company Cloud9. Amazon, which has headquarters in Seattle, Washington, United States, was established in 1994. Through its Amazon Web Services (AWS) division it is the industry’s leading cloud services provider and the company’s purchase of Cloud9 strengthens its cloud development capability. The financial aspects of the purchase have not been released.

Cloud9, which has headquarters in Amsterdam, Netherlands, operates a “state-of-the-art online development environment for JavaScript and Node.js applications”. Its cloud-native integrated development environment (IDE) maximizes usability, speed and collaboration for the benefit of developers. Its platform facilitates a range of programming languages including Python, JavaScript with Node.js and Ruby. The company has only been in business since 2010 and in that time has signed up 500,000 users.

News of the acquisition was reported on Cloud9’s website blog by Ruben Daniels, Cloud9’s CEO and founder. "We're excited to let you, our users and customers, be among the first to learn that we have been acquired by Amazon,” suggested Mr. Daniels. “We will be joining the AWS family, and we're looking forward to working together on terrific customer offerings for the future." He went on to suggest, “It's still business as usual—we'll continue to work with our Ace Open Source community and to provide our innovative services to you and our hundreds of thousands of customers worldwide. Over time, we'll work with AWS to do even more on your behalf”, suggesting his team would be absorbed by AWS.
