Cloud Giant Google to Allow Researchers to Utilize Cloud Platform
Cloud giant Google is to allow ‘promising’ researchers to utilize its cloud platform. An Alphabet Inc. company, Google has global head offices in Mountain View, California, United States. The company is one of the leading cloud players competing with the likes of AWS and Microsoft. Its’ support for researchers is designed to ease the cost of research and make it more secure through credits for cloud platform services.

The news of the scheme – called Google Cloud Platform (GCP) research credits – was announced in a post on Google’s official blog. The aim of the scheme is to enable researchers to benefit from Google’s cloud-based machine-learning, analytics, and data storage options. A number of researchers from key educational institutions are benefitting from the initiative. These include researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. Awards are valued at $5,000 in GCP credits with the ability to apply for additional credits. While Google aims to take the scheme worldwide, at present it is restricted to number of countries including the United Kingdom, Austria, Germany, Italy, France, Denmark, or Sweden, and of course the United States.

“From Big Data projects like Strayer University’s student support system to AI projects like Carnegie Mellon’s socially aware robot, researchers are discovering that cloud technology can help make academic research cheaper, faster, easier, and more secure,” explained Steven Butschi, Higher Education, Google Cloud. “Whether you’re just starting out with a new idea, or validating your work before sharing it with the public, we want to help you advance your new discoveries. That’s why we’re deepening our support for your biggest questions and best guesses through a new program: Google Cloud Platform (GCP) research credits. Academic researchers in qualified regions are encouraged to apply.”
