Cloud Giant IBM Acquires Australian IoT Provider
Cloud giant IBM has acquired a major Australian Internet of Things (IoT) provider. IBM -traditionally known as ‘Big Blue’ - is a globally recognized brand. It has headquarters in Armonk, New York, United States and was formerly recognized as a software and hardware provider. These days the company is known for its cloud activity. It bought Softlayer in 2012 to strengthen its cloud capabilities and now offers a broad range of storage and compute services including ‘Big Data’ solutions and IBM Machine Learning. The company it has acquired is Oniqua Holdings Pty Ltd. (Oniqua).

Oniqua, which has global headquarters in Denver, Colorado, United States, also has a major presence in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The company is recognized as specializing in IoT and caters to several industries. Its expertise lies in software for inventory optimization for “asset-intensive industries” including mining, oil, transport, and the manufacturing industry. The financial aspects of the deal have not been released, but by acquiring Oniqua IBM enhances its IoT capabilities, especially in the area of ‘Asset Optimization Practice” – an expanding area.

“Clients are moving from legacy, on-premise offerings to new cloud-based predictive analytics and prescriptive maintenance offerings,” explained Jay Bellissimo, the General Manager of Cognitive Process Transformation at IBM. “But without instant access to the right data, they are still susceptible to critical equipment breakdowns that can cripple their businesses”.
