Cloud Giant Microsoft and Open Source Software Pioneer SUSE Sign New Public Cloud Agreement
Cloud giant Microsoft and Open Source (OS) software pioneer SUSE have signed a new agreement that will see the companies working together on public cloud activity. Microsoft, which has headquarters in Redmond, Washington, United States, provides Azure, one of the industry’s leading cloud platforms. SUSE, which has headquarters in Nuremberg, Germany, specializes in Linux solutions.

The new agreement is the latest version of agreements between the two companies that go back to a patent-licensing agreement signed in 2006. This agreement, which addresses public cloud activity, has had its terms and commitments thoroughly updated.

At the signing of the original agreement, SUSE’s activities in the United States came under Novell, a company acquired by the Attachmate Group in 2010 and then sold on to Micro Focus in the United Kingdom in 2014. SUSE eventually became a standalone company again and Microsoft extended its agreement with the company until the beginning of this year. Microsoft has recently made making considerable investments in Linux.

“Microsoft’s Linux business has grown to over 22 to 25% of their public cloud business, demonstrating customer commitment to Linux,” explained SUSE’s Global Alliance Director for Public Cloud, Kristin Kinan “Their investment in open source solutions, selling initiatives and partnering has exceeded our expectations,” she added.
