Cloud Giant Microsoft Corporation Acquires Data Protection Company Secure Islands
Cloud giant Microsoft Corporation (Microsoft) has acquired data protection company Secure Islands Technologies (Secure Islands). Microsoft, which has headquarters in Redmond, Washington, United States, offers Microsoft Azure, a cloud platform that competes with services like Amazon Web Services (AWS) and which has been enjoying increasing popularity over the last number of years. Its purchase of Secure Islands will allow Microsoft to significantly enhance Azure’s security.

Secure Islands was originally established in Israel (where it still has a presence) but now has corporate headquarters in New York, United States alongside facilities in the United Kingdom. It has worked extensively with Microsoft prior to the acquisition. Microsoft will utilize Secure Islands’ solutions for its Azure Rights Management Service.

Secure Islands “develops and markets advanced and innovative Information Protection and Control (IPC) solutions, incorporating intelligent and patent-pending data-centric security technology”. Its flagship offering is IQProtector, a “comprehensive, policy-driven classification and protection solution” which provides accurate classifications of data based on context and content. The solution leverages Microsoft RMS to apply “persistent protection to files and emails”.

“We are excited to inform you that we have reached an agreement to be acquired by Microsoft!,” explained Secure Islands’ website at the time of going to press. “Throughout our journey, we’ve helped organizations achieve persistent data protection without compromising user productivity. Our solutions have enabled organizations worldwide to classify and protect data throughout its lifecycle and now, by joining Microsoft, we will have the opportunity to help many more customers seamlessly protect and share their sensitive information. We are excited to be a part of Microsoft to increase our reach and scale.”
