Diane Greene Joins Cloud Giant Google
Diane Greene, the co-founder and former CEO of Palo Alto, California-based cloud and virtualization software and services company VMware, has joined cloud giant Google. The decision to engage Ms. Greene to lead Google’s Enterprise Cloud activity was made by the company’s board and announced on the blog of Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai last Thursday, November 19, 2015. At the same time as announcing Ms. Greene’s appointment, the company also announced it was buying Bebop, the enterprise development platform startup she is founder of.

Ms. Greene will be in charge of a new Google division that brings together all Google’s cloud activity (Google Apps, Google for Work and Google Cloud Platform) to better compete with cloud companies like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft and IBM. The new division will have its own sales and marketing team. The news comes alongside an announcement that Google believes cloud computing will represent the bulk of its income by 2020.

“As a long-time industry veteran and co-founder and CEO of VMWare, Diane needs no introduction,” explained Mr. Pichai on his blog. “Cloud computing is revolutionizing the way people live and work, and there is no better person to lead this important area. We’re also lucky that Diane has agreed to remain on Google’s Board of Directors (she has already served three years here) – as she has a huge amount of operational experience that will continue to help the company.”
