Domain Name Registrars 123-reg and Verisign Team Up to Promote “.COM” Domain Names to Small Businesses in the United Kingdom
Domain name registrars 123-reg and Verisign have teamed up to promote “.COM” domain names to small businesses in the United Kingdom. The companies aim to maintain the prevalence of the top-level domain (TLD) as the “small business” domain of choice.

The move comes in the wake of a flurry of activity in the domain name arena. Around 650 new domain extensions will be introduced between now and the end of 2015. To name but a few, recently introduced domains include “.LONDON”, “.GURU”, and the most recently released, “.XYZ”.

123-reg is recognized as being the UK's largest domain registrar, and Verisign a global domain name leader. Verisign powers the “.COM” domain, which was introduced in 1985. It is by far the most recognizable domain extension on the Internet, with 97% of the top 100 global brands maintaining websites that utilize a “.COM” domain name. Although many had viewed the introduction of such a wide range of domain extensions as evidence that “.COM” domains were running out, numerous inexpensive “.COM” domains still exist.

"In spite of the recent proliferation of domains available to businesses, sales of “.COM” have remained strong - and with good reason,” explained the Group Managing Director of 123-reg, Matt Mansell. “Whilst new generic Top-Level Domains, are great for expressing personality and showing something distinctive about what you do, “.COM” remains the most well known and most popular domain for businesses online. This is something we expect to continue for quite some time to come.''
