End-to-end InfiniBand and Ethernet Solutions Provider Mellanox Announces Support for IBM Power Systems’ New Open Platform for DBaaS
End-to-end InfiniBand and Ethernet solutions provider Mellanox Technologies, Ltd. (Mellanox) has announced support for IBM Power Systems’ new Open Platform for Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS). Mellanox, which has headquarters in Sunnyvale, California, United States and in Yokneam, Israel, was established in 1999. The company offers interconnect solutions that “increase data center efficiency” and alongside InfiniBand and Ethernet solutions its offerings extend to High Performance Computing (HPC).

In an era where businesses receive data from an increasing number of sources, conventional databases used in more traditional computing cannot deal with companies’ database requirements. As a result, companies are upgrading data platforms with hardware and software that can establish patterns and insights from structured AND unstructured data.

The advantages of DBaaS are that it offers improved speed and agility and a reduction in licensing and infrastructure costs. In addition, DBaaS solutions address ‘database sprawl’ where businesses generate “hundreds or thousands of unutilized databases” over extended periods of time. It provides an ideal solution for developers who need “fast, flexible, and secure performance and reliability as they work on multiple applications using multiple operating systems and databases”.

“Companies must undergo digital transformation in order to compete and lead in the data-driven Insight Economy, and open source economics and innovation are speeding this digital transformation,” explained Mellanox’s Vice President Marketing, Kevin Deierling. “Open Database-as-a-Service has proven to be one of the most efficient ways to meet today’s business requirements including high performance, high availability, and scalability at a lower cost of ownership. In order to achieve these goals, it is critical to choose the right interconnect solution.”
