Equinix are adding a new International Business Exchange data center in the Brazilian city Rio de Janeiro. The center is aimed to be completed in the first quarter of 2013 with the first phase expected to cost around $20 million.
Along with the Rio announcement, Equinix proclaimed it will also begin phase two of its construction on their data center in Sao Paulo, which is projected for completion in early 2013.
The new building in Rio de Janeiro will have space for an initial 320 cabinets with the view to cater for 1,170 upon completion.
Charles Meyers, president of the Americas for Equinix explained the company’s expansion in the South American country; "As the seventh largest economy in the world, Brazil is experiencing continued economic and infrastructure expansion, making it an attractive country for multi-national investment," he said.
The global data center provider and acquired ALOG in April 2011 who will build the premises. They took over the company with Riverwood Capital, however maintain the majority share in the company.
Through ALOG, Equinix offers colocation, interconnection and managed hosting services from its three existing Brazil-based data centers. The expansion of the two new data centers comes following a government announcement that the country's GDP will grow by around three percent in 2012.
Meyers concluded; "With the expansions in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, we are in a strong position to support increasing demand for Platform Equinix from key global customers looking to expand in the region."
