Financial Times Report Suggests Instagram Now More Popular than Twitter with Smartphone Users
In news that could impact the marketing plans of many in the hosting industry, a recent Financial Times report has suggested that Instagram is now more popular than Twitter with smartphone users in the United States.

Instagram is owned by Facebook after the social network bought the online photo and video-sharing site in April of 2012 for $1 Billion in a bid to keep in touch with younger social network users – a market Facebook was losing rapidly. In October 2013 Facebook announced Instagram would begin to sell advertising that would “feel as natural to Instagram as the photos and videos” it shows, so its current growth in smartphone usage bodes well for Facebook achieving a return on its investment.

According to the Financial Times’ report, which quotes E-Marketer the research group, almost 35 million Americans used Instagram “at least once a month” in 2013 while only 30.8 million Americans utilized Twitter’s mobile app. Instagram has around 200 million monthly active users globally – a 600% increase since 2012.

Instagram was Facebook’s first acquisition and the news of its growth through mobile devices came against a backdrop of the social network’s purchase of WhatsApp in February of this year, and its more recent purchase of virtual reality headset maker Oculus for $2 billion.
