Go Daddy Incorporates Sender ID Framework to Expand Email Security

August 31, 2004
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. and REDMOND, Wash.–The Sender ID Framework Implementation Summit--(August 31, 2004) – The Go Daddy Group, Inc., parent company of GoDaddy.com, the No. 1 registrar of new domain names, today announced it will integrate the Sender ID Framework for email authentication co-developed by Microsoft and Meng Wong, CTO of pobox.com, into its email security system, continuing Go Daddy's leadership position in the fight against spam and online phishing scams.

'Go Daddy is dedicated to working with the industry to develop and implement authenticated email systems in the hopes of combating the growing issues of spam and phishing," said Bob Parsons, president and founder of Go Daddy. 'With more than 6 million domain names under management, Go Daddy has long been a leader when it comes to new programs and services to combat spam and other online fraud that can degrade the value of the domain name and brand. We anticipate being in full compliance with the Sender ID specifications during the fourth quarter of 2004 and will directly support Sender ID specifications in our email and DNS services."

Currently, the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) is reviewing this Sender ID system on a fast track. Sender ID will provide email recipients with validation that the email was sent from the domain it claims to be from. By authenticating all emails, Sender ID will help eliminate domain spoofing to better protect email users from online phishing attacks and spam and defend genuine senders' domain names and reputations.

"Email users today have no guarantee that their email is coming from the person it claims to be from, and many legitimate companies are seeing both their reputation as email senders and their brand overall being damaged by scammers and spammers abusing their domain names," said Craig Spiezle, Director of Industry and Partner Relations, Microsoft Safety Technology and Strategy Team. 'We are excited to be working with Go Daddy on their implementation of Sender ID to help deliver strong email authentication solutions to the market as swiftly as possible and help rebuild trust in email as a valuable communications mechanism worldwide."

As an industry leader, Go Daddy itself has pledged its support of Sender ID by publishing all of its own Sender ID records to the DNS by October, two months earlier than the requested January 2005 deadline. In addition, Go Daddy will support its customers by offering a DNS 'Wizard" within its domain name management software that will allow current Go Daddy customers to publish their own DNS records easily, no matter what ISP they use to actually send emails.

'Go Daddy has always had strict anti-fraud policies, so joining with Microsoft on Sender ID augments our current policies and practices," said Parsons. 'We have long recognized the advantages of complete online security for the protection of domain names and, consequently, brand identity. Sender ID is another way Go Daddy can demonstrate its support for its customers."
