GoDaddy.com, which is sponsoring seven races for Hendrick this season, succeeds cereal maker Kellogg's on Martin's Chevy. The company also sponsors Danica Patrick in the IndyCar Series and is featuring open-wheel's most popular driver in a current series of racy TV and web ads.
At first glance Martin's age seems outside GoDaddy's younger-skewing target demographic. But in landing sponsorship Martin noted that perception might be premature.
"When you register a new domain name every second, you must be reaching a broad spectrum of people," Martin said. "It is nice they didn't pass on an opportunity to sponsor the 5 car. It's not the best of times for sponsorship acquisition, so that's another success."
Said GoDaddy.com CEO Bob Parsons in a release: "Mark Martin is the consummate professional and a very exciting driver, to say the least. He's the sentimental favorite for this year's Sprint Cup championship, and we're stoked to have him driving for GoDaddy next year."
Added Martin: "As long as I can have fun, compete at a high level and have the opportunity to win, I'm going to continue to do this. I'm having a blast, and that's always been most important to me and my family."
Greg Biffle (FSY), a teammate when Martin drove for Roush Fenway Racing, said the contract extension is not surprising.
"He's in damn good equipment and it will be hard to hang your hat up, driving and winning races and performing at the level that he is," Biffle said. "So I certainly wouldn't be a betting man on when he is going to hang his helmet up."
