July 24, 2009 – (HOSTSEARCH.COM) – EcoServ is a new service from 2020Media, an established UK hosting provider. Ecoserv uses new technologies to lower the environmental cost of server hosting, without sacrificing any of the essential services.
The EcoServ website is at http://eco.2020media.com. It works by using new low-power Atom dual-cpu servers, and a UK datacentre that is at the forefront of environmental responsibility. The datacentre transforms generated waste heat into energy for the local Docklands community & uses solar power. The servers use new low-power processors and run at less that 40W/hour – less than a light bulb. 2020media are the first company to offer this service in the UK.[1][2].
A recent Datamonitor report suggests that IT solutions such as virtualisation, efficient datacentre design and asset lifecycle management will prosper as long as the recession continues [3]. 2020Media aim to have 50% of their new business using green servers and the green datacentre in 2 years time.
All companies should be looking to reduce the impact on the environment of their IT equipment. Outsourcing to a hosting provider is one step that many already take, but to go further they should look at the impact their host makes too. EcoServ is focused on reducing this to the minimum using new technology.
