Beanstalk Solar Hosting now accepts Bitcoins as payment for hosting services. Established in 1996, the company is a division of The Unleaded Group website design and development agency, which has satellite offices in Spain and India. It caters to a range of customers, including Fortune 500 companies.
Beanstalk offers a range of web hosting services that are all powered by solar energy gathered by rooftop solar panels that generate 3.7 kilowatts of electricity. The company's commitment to the environment means that any excess energy it creates goes back into the Xcel Energy power grid.
Since 1 July, 2013, the company has allowed its customers to pay for its green web hosting services using Bitcoins, a "virtual currency" established in 2008. Bitcoins has become a favorite method of payment for tech-savvy businesses. The software that drives Bitcoins is free and open source, and there is no cost to join the scheme. In addition, and most importantly for merchants, there are none of the transaction fees attached to traditional transfer schemes such as credit card transfer.
According to its President, Jarod Clark, Bitcoins was a natural choice for such an innovative company as Beanstalk Solar Hosting. “We’ve always been proud of our position as an innovator in providing Internet services and development, so when Bitcoins became an alternative to traditional methods of payment, we wanted to embrace the technology,” explained Mr. Clark. “Beanstalk Solar Hosting’s forward-looking customers share our confidence in Bitcoins. We have a client who does over $800,000 a month in Bitcoin transactions, so obviously they are gaining traction, especially in ecommerce.”
