September 25, 2006 (HOSTSEARCH.COM) Web hosting provider HostGator has been attacked by hackers exploiting vulnerability in cPanel, it was reported recently. According to the company the attack was caused by hackers exploiting vulnerability in cPanel, the popular control panel.
"I can tell you with all accuracy that this is definitely due to a cPanel exploit that provides root access and all cPanel servers are affected," HostGators System Administrator Mr. Tim Greer was reported as saying.
"This issue affects all versions of cPanel, from what I can tell, from years ago to the current releases, including Stable, Release, Current and Edge," added Mr. Greer.
The attack came last week and resulted in HostGator's servers redirecting some of its customers web sites to other sites hosting malware. The vulnerability put many web hosts using the panel at risk, but the company producing cPanel subsequently released a patch to counter its exploitation. Servers remain at risk until the patch is installed.
