Web Host Hostway Announces Launch of Content Delivery Network
March 28, 2008 – (HOSTSEARCH.COM) – Web host Hostway (http://www.hostway.co.uk) has announced the launch of its Content Delivery Network (CDN) – a system that “intelligently routes user web traffic to the geographically closest server”. According to Hostway, routing users to the nearest server using Foundry ServerIron 4G switches will improve the “user experience” because the nearest server will usually be the best-performing.
“Almost all large companies have their website accessible on a number of servers around the world, but traffic to these servers is rarely intelligently routed,” explained Hostway UK’s Enterprise Technology Manager, Mr. David Foxley. “For example, British customers logging onto a global concert ticketing site could be delayed by waiting for data to travel across the transatlantic link, instead of being redirected to the UK site, which might mean that customers do not get the seats they want, or worse still, miss out on a certain gig date.”
CDN has obvious advantages. Avoiding connections with servers geographically located a long way from where a user is accessing the Internet, will increase loading times, and make viewing videos and other “rich content” easier. Hostway’s CDN also detects network server failure and redirects users to “the next best performing server”.
“Although broadband speeds are accelerating, user experience is frequently far from optimal,” added Mr. Foxley. “However, this isn’t always down to connection speed - a great deal depends on the hosting environment and website itself. By introducing the content delivery network, we hope to give our customers a competitive edge by ensuring that their websites always load as quickly as possible and provide the best possible experience.”
