IIJ to Open New Nerima Data Center

November 11, 2008
November 11, 2008 – (HOSTSEARCH.COM) – Internet Initiative Japan Inc.(http://www.iij.ad.jp/en), one of Japan's leading Internet access and comprehensive network solutions providers, and Net Care, Inc., the IIJ Group contact center and network operation outsourcing company, has announced the opening of the new Nerima Data Center, which will begin operation in February 2009.

The Nerima Data Center is the fifteenth data center to be opened by the IIJ Group, and its purpose is to meet the growing demand for data center services in the Kanto area. The Nerima Data Center has the following features.

A full outsourcing menu
Billed as an outsourcing-on-demand data center, it will provide a wide range of services such as system operation and monitoring, in addition to basic collocation services. The data center will serve as a platform on which other IIJ group services can be run to provide total network solutions, from network systems construction to systems outsourcing. By connecting the Nerima Data Center with the Shinsaibashi Data Center opened in July of this year, it can also be used as a disaster recovery site.

Environmentally friendly design
The center has many design touches that make it more environmentally sound, such as the planting of ivies around the building to make air conditioning more efficient. There are also other measures in the works to expand the environmental measures implemented at the site, such as placing plants on the roof and installing solar panels.

Efficient power use
The data center will be equipped with energy-saving devices, such as LED lights and motion sensors that turn lights on and off automatically when not in use, in order to reduce the amount of power used for lighting. More efficient use of electrical power is being promoted at the data center through more efficient air conditioning with localized cooling of heat-generating equipment. In our quest to create a highly energy-efficient data center, various indexes like the PUE(*) are being employed in the management of IT equipment power throughout the data center.

To respond to the growing demand for data center services, IIJ will continue to offer data center solutions at prime locations and will actively work to provide next-generation data centers that are efficient in terms of time, cost, and energy, and that can accommodate high heat-generating equipment.

(*)PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness):
One of the indices used to indicate energy efficiency at the data center. It is the quotient of the total electric power consumption of the data center divided by the electric power consumption of all servers and other IT equipment. This index is promoted by industry groups such as The Green Grid who promote energy efficiency at data centers.
