iiNet Pioneers 100GbE with New Juniper Networks Backbone

July 8, 2011
July 8, 2011 – (HOSTSEARCH.COM) – Juniper Networks (NYSE: JNPR) today announced that its routers are being used by iiNet (ASX: IIN), a leading Australian DSL Internet service provider. iiNet migrated its backbone to Juniper Networks T1600 Core Routers at the beginning of this year and started a two-month trial of Juniper's 100GbE interface cards in May - the first 100GbE deployment in the Asia Pacific market.

The Australian ISP market is entering a new era with the initial roll-out of the government-owned National Broadband Network (NBN), a A$35.7 billion project aimed at making gigabit per second (Gbps) Internet access, via fiber-to-the-premises connections, available to 93 percent of the population. While, in the long term, this will eliminate the need for broadband ISPs to provide the "last mile" connection to customers, it places a much greater burden on their backbone networks.

Greg Bader, chief technology officer at iiNet said "We're passionate about providing our customers with the very best service and technology" He also mentioned that "Rather than waiting for the NBN to be rolled out around the country, we're continuously upgrading the iiNet network so our customers can have the very best experience. Partnering with Juniper Networks gives us confidence in the fact that we're using the most advanced technology as we expand our services around the country."

iiNet currently delivers broadband, telephony and IPTV services across its fixed network infrastructure, with more than 1.3 million customer service agreements in place. NBN access will enable iiNet to deliver richer and more bandwidth-intensive service offerings in an open, nation-wide marketplace.

"Maximizing the opportunity presented by Australia's NBN project is going to require a new generation of service provider network" said Mark Iles, vice president, Australia and New Zealand, Juniper Networks. "iiNet is pioneering 100GbE in Australia and is helping to create a new network that will serve the 'gigabit-to-the-home' marketplace. Juniper Networks and iiNet are working together to deliver a scalable, cost-effective and reliable high-speed network that empowers service innovation."

Juniper Networks T1600 routing platform delivers up to 1.6 Tbps of capacity with the ability to forward up to 1.92 billion packets per second - and up to 16 T1600 chassis can be matrixed into a single routing entity with a sustainable throughput rate of up to 25 Tbps/30.7 billion pps - giving iiNet tremendous scope and flexibility to scale its backbone. Juniper's 100GbE interface card for the T16000 uses pluggable optical modules, enabling iiNet to take advantage of new modules that support greater cabling distances, an important consideration for backbone network design.
