Speedcast has announced the launch of SIGMA Gateway - a “new network device capable of managing Speedcast’s global VSAT, L-Band, Fleet Xpress, 4G/LTE and Wi-Fi services”.
Speedcast, which has global headquarters in Hong Kong, was established in 1983. The company bills itself as “the world’s most trusted provider of highly reliable, fully managed, end-to-end remote communication and IT solutions”. Its services extend to the design, integration, and optimization of networks based on their customers’ requirements. Speedcast caters to a global customer base of over 2,000 customers in industries that include maritime, oil and gas, enterprise, and media. The new SIGMA Gateway facilitates the availability and performance of Fleet Xpress, which offers “connectivity and exceptional performance across the world's oceans,” including offshore rigs and cruise ships.
Using only 1U of rack space, SIGMA Gateway is integrated with eight managed network switch ports which are available for customer use (with the additional option of an additional eight to 24 ports as required). Compared to separate NSD, router, server and network switch appliances, the solution saves up to 5U of rack space. It also offers a secure virtualized environment which hosts third party Virtual Machines (VMs) that are “completely managed via the SIGMA Portal”, facilitating remote configuration and dedicated resource allocation. SIGMA Gateway is secured by the Cisco FirePOWER firewall.
