| May was another splendid month for web hosting. Unlike rock and roll, May proved that web hosting can save the world -- or at least help. Web host HostIgnition showed us the way by donating sales revenue to WorldVision's disaster relief -- nice one HostIgnition. Let's see more of this! May did, however, show that virtually everyone is getting in on the hosting act. YOB is now offering domains and web hosting alongside their accounting software options (see this month's interview). Likewise, IBM is supplementing its web hosting services by expanding its managed wireless services for BlackBerry. Google, it seems, is ever inching further and further towards becoming a fully fledged web host -- or is it there? The company has priced its Google Apps options... and "that which we call (web hosting) by any other name would smell as sweet!" Always in the news, Go Daddy seems to be heavily involved in NASCAR these days. Go Daddy is sponsoring NASCAR's Craftsman Truck Series and they have renewed Danica Patrick's sponsorship. Although edgy advertising is one thing, perhaps Bob Parsons should cast his mind back to Globat's Defying Gravity activity -- too much of a good thing can be too much. It would be sad if their advertising became their product in consumers' minds. We've usually seen more on the acquisitions front than we saw in May. Planet Online Corporation acquired SeeMoreSearch.com, apart from that, little to mention. Things did, however, remain green in May... Hosting.com showed its green credentials and Internap announced it would launch a new "Green" colocation facility in Boston. Fewer people than usual on the move in May as well. 1&1 Internet did however appoint Oliver Mauss to replace Andreas Gauger as CEO. A couple of companies announced their attendance at certain events. The Planet announced it would host a forum on IT compliance and risk management while it was announced the Senior Executive Officer of private label hosted software services provider groupSPARK would address ISPCon Spring 2008. Plenty going on in the world of domains in May. ResellerClub announced it would offer .ME landrush pre-applications, Easyspace offered .Biz discounts, Afilias launched a new .INFO product site and LogicBoxes introduced its Promo Engine feature. In addition, Dotster offered tips for SMB website success and UK2 launched an enhanced domain look up. Some companies moved into new premises or enhanced what they have already in May - Eleven2 relocated to better meet the needs of its customers, The Planet upgraded its Network Operations Center with Cisco-Certified engineers, and ResellerChoice expanded its Peer1 75 Broad Street, NYC data center location. A good, solid batch of new contracts and partnerships in May -- Tucows Inc. and Hostopia.com, Inc. signed a definitive agreement for Hostopia to purchase certain Tucows' shared hosting customer assets, cPanel partnered with R1Soft to offer continuous data protection for web hosts, Peak 10 announced an expanded $60 million credit facility led by RBC Capital Markets, and Network Solutions and Open-Xchange partnered to deliver hosted email and collaboration services to small businesses. In addition, iomart won a 1M pound colocation managed services contract, 1&1 Internet joined the Open Source Business Foundation, UNC Charlotte selected Hosted Solutions, Attenda was chosen to manage MNPA's new customer self-service web portal, Parallels and Zend formed a technology partnership, and NFSi Telecom joined R1Soft's Hosting Partner program. Other relationships in May included UK managed hosting provider iomart providing services to Censorit, and DemoWolf and outsourced technical support provider BobCares joining forces. A nice lot of awards given to web hosts and related companies in May -- DiscountASP.NET won a 'Reader's Best Hosting Service' award for the fourth year in a row, Red Herring named Parallels one of North America's 100 top private companies, The Planet's Vice President of Facilities won the Data Center Manager of the Year award and Aventure Host achieved R1Soft Hosting Partner status. There were, of course, masses of companies that brought in new products in May. The Planet extended its Private Rack Solution with New Virtual Rack, Easyspace announced Windows-based Virtual Servers, Hostopia launched a fax-to-email service, Layered Technologies offered a new range of servers to meet the enterprise market, and Handy Networks introduced Adobe ColdFusion 8 to its hosting plans. In addition, AptHost unveiled Managed Virtual Private Servers (VPS) hosting plans, C I Host launched a new backup solution, AIT 'unleashed' a dedicated server suite, MochaHost launched a new affiliate and referral program, Gearworx VPS announced VPS hosting services, and Crucial Paradigm announced it would introduce Windows 2008 Virtual Private Servers. As usual, rather than introduce new products and services, a number of companies enhanced their offerings. SiteGround.com promised free web hosting resources, new content and new templates this quarter, Host Color added osTicket, CrystalTech web hosting announced the adoption of SmarterTrack, OLM.Net shifted focus to expand dedicated server offerings, 3FN improved its Content Delivery Network to reduce web page load time, Host Color added Moodle, LFC Hosting announced a new web 2.0 email tool, and RSHosting.com announced the addition of RVSiteBuilder to its range of options. In addition, Easy CGI provided a form-based password protection option for Windows 2008 hosting. Alongside product and service enhancements and new products, there were equally as many promotions keeping companies ahead of the curve. Eleven2 Hosting offered an economic stimulus plan (?), iNFRENION.com offered a free WHMCS license, and The Planet announced a server blowout sale alongside a Firewall promotion. As we said -- May was a good month... Let's hope June is even better! |
