Memset MD Kate Craig-Wood has offered web hosts advice on how to survive the economic downturn, it was reported recently. Ms. Craig-Wood, who recently won the Entrepreneur of the Year Award at the Guildford Life with Style 2008/9 Awards, suggests the key to her success has been to “keep a close eye on business opportunities and reposition her business quickly to take advantage of them”.
Ms. Craig-Wood suggests businesses should address product and service offerings to “see if there is anyway they can capitalize during the credit crunch”. She realized a “credit crunch together with increased environmental awareness and the relentless increase in demand for computing resource was likely to force CIO and CTO's to start to look at outsourcing their IT infrastructure”. As a result, she repositioned Memset to “cater to that audience”. As a result the company is still experiencing growth.
According to Ms. Craig-Wood, there will be increasing opportunity for “smaller and more efficient” hosting businesses to win large clients as they look to the SME sector for cost savings and outsourcing. She also believes businesses should remain focused on reducing their carbon footprint during this time, as there is a direct relationship between reducing waste and increasing profit. Memset became the UK's first CarbonNeutral ISP in August 2006. Offsetting the business’ carbon footprint has not only resulted in improved energy efficiency and reduced costs.
