Microsoft Denies Code Execution Possibility in XP SP2 Security Flaw

Share
July 18, 2005 - (HOSTSEARCH.COM) - Web hosting providers will want to be on alert for the next several weeks until Microsoft can fix a Windows XP SP2 flaw. In a statement released to Ziff Davis Internet News, Microsoft denied that a DoS attack reported by Security Protocol research lab’s Tom Ferris involved the possibility of code execution despite, according to an eWeek report, that the possibility has been raised on several security forums.

Whether the Windows XP SP2 flaw is vulnerable to code execution or it’s simply Linux extremist ranting the Secunia has given the flaw a "moderately critical" rating.

Ferris has been working with Microsoft on patching the flaw since early May and Microsoft is slated to release the fix in August.
