Mobile Satellite Services Company Iridium Joins AWS IoT Cloud Distribution Partner Network
Mobile satellite services company Iridium Communications Inc. (Iridium) has joined Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) Internet of Things (IoT) cloud distribution partner network. Established in 2000, Iridium has headquarters in McLean, Virginia, United States. It is “the only mobile satellite service (MSS) company offering pole-to-pole coverage over the entire globe”. The company offers Low-Earth Orbiting (LEO) satellites that provide voice and data services to areas “not served by terrestrial communication networks”. Iridium has a broad customer base which includes US and international government agencies such as the US Department of Defense. The service is earmarked for launch in 2019.

Iridium joined the AWS Partner Network to make its Iridium CloudConnect cloud-based IoT solution available to AWS customers. AWS IoT will enable companies to “integrate Iridium's satellite reach”. The cooperation between the two organizations will reduce the cost of developing new products and services and bring them to market more quickly. As it supports AWS IoT protocols “each existing Iridium partner will be able to rapidly adopt AWS services”.

"Iridium CloudConnect will completely change the speed at which a satellite IoT solution can be deployed and will allow existing AWS customers to keep everything the same on the back end, while opening up the opportunity to quickly expand their coverage," explained Matt Desch, the CEO of Iridium. "This is a major disruption for satellite IoT. Costs will drop, time to market will speed up, risk will be reduced, and AWS IoT customers that choose Iridium CloudConnect can now enjoy true global connectivity for their solutions."
