IBM has acquired cloud computing company CSL International - a virtualization management technology provider focusing on IBM's zEnterprise system. The purchase was announced last week and although figures for the deal were not officially released, a number of analysts have suggested it cost IBM around $20 million. The purchase has "deepened (IBM's) cloud capabilities by offering simplified management of the virtualization environment".
Established in 2004 by Sharon Chen, CSL International is an Israeli company with headquarters in Herzliya Pituach. The company provides a range of zSeries and Enterprise IT solutions. Together IBM and CSL International technologies allow clients to fully manage z/VM and Linux on System z virtualization, including managing CPU, memory, storage, and network resources.
CSL International's CSL-WAVE software facilitates z/VM and Linux on System z environment management. The software's interface provides a simple 'drag and drop' capability that provides a range of options. The zEnterprise System enables clients to "host the workloads of thousands of commodity servers on a single system".
"As clients create smarter computing environments, they are looking for ways to manage IT costs and complexity without sacrificing security or the ability to scale," explained IBM Business Line Executive, System z, Greg Lotko. "The response by clients to the advantages of Linux on System z have been tremendous, with the shipped capacity nearly doubling in 1Q13 year to year. With the acquisition of CSL International, IBM expands its cloud virtualization capabilities, making it even easier for clients to take advantage of Linux on System z."
