June offered a number of highlights as far as web hosting is concerned. As ever, Go Daddy was in the news. The company is experiencing major growth in line with trends outlined in a couple of recent industry reports. The Planet meanwhile announced the availability of a white paper on next-generation SMB requirements. Also in June, an opportunist emerged recognizing that a pint of milk does not fit into a half-pint jug - a new website was launched which promised to buy unprofitable web hosting businesses. At least there is a way out if the going gets too tough!
Rackspace announced it would host Will Ferrell's new site in June, and with celebrity in mind, web hosting showed some teeth (and scruples) when the celebrity gossip site PerezHilton.com was dropped by its web host for copyright violation. On the other side of the Atlantic though, Dutch web host Leaseweb was in the news with a court telling the company it must shut down a private torrent site. Trouble down under as well - Australia's largest web and application hosting company experienced major difficulties in June, including an email shut down -- strewth!
Plenty of awards in June with a survey highlighting UK web hosting provider and ISP Zen Internet's reliability and service, and Microsoft announcing finalists for the 2007 Microsoft Partner Program Awards. Likewise, plenty of partnerships emerged. Fusepoint and Opsware started working together, Peak 10 catered for SnagAJob.com, ninemsn decided to continue with Australian web hosting provider Hostworks, and Sanfire and Equentity LLC decided to form a strategic partnership.
A number of companies were on the move in June, Spiderhost moved into new offices and WebSitePulse opened monitoring locations in China. As ever, there were promotions a plenty as people tried to keep ahead of the pack. Host Color promoted .EU domains, CrystalTech dedcied to offer free hosting until 2008, and DemoWolf came up with a good one, offering a draw for a HostingCon 2007 conference pass. A number of companies built on existing offerings, Cirrushosting improved its hosting and VPS, Network Solutions offered more website design options, Eskhosting added domain privacy, and Rackspace UK added managed Microsoft Exchange. And, of course the environment remained in focus in June, with Barak Hosting taking measures to help protect the environment.
All in all, another useful month of web hosting in June... Let's see what July brings! |
