The Web Hosting and Internet news for September was dominated by how companies dealt with the impacts of Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita as well as how they helped deal with the aftermaths. 1PlanHost.com, BulkRegister, AmericaUnited, HurricaneHousingSearch.com, Intermedia.NET , HurricaneHousingSearch.com, KatrinaHousing.org, Aplus.Net , KatrinaHousing.org, Weblinkhosting.com, and Globat.com were among the companies and Web sites offering donations and a range of assistance from providing businesses with free hosting, to running Web sites designed to reunite people separated by the disasters, and finding housing for victims left homeless.
Phishing and security issues came to the forefront in September, with a number of initiatives and products that designed to counter fraudsters. The Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG), which claims companies such as Panda Software as its members, claimed that over 70 companies around the world were victims of Phishing attacks in July 2005, and offered a number of recommendations to help counter the activity. C I Host announced the development of an Anti-Scam Toolbar while Earthlink announced the addition of ScamBlocker, an anti-'phishing', feature to its MailBox email client. SurfControl plc issued a warning about the next level of phising; "Secured Phishing" - the technique leverages the average Internet user's marginal knowledge of Web security issues to make them feel they truly are entering a bone fide Web site. Despite all the focus on phishing, the 260-member, not-for-profit Information Security Forum (ISF) plc (which includes half of the Fortune 100) warned that Trojan attacks would become a greater threat in the future.
The results of a couple of interesting surveys offered in September produced some fascinating insights into Internet user behavior. Hostway Corporation (ISF) plc looked at what drives consumers away from your E-businesses finding a staggering 70% of respondents suggested they were unlikely to even return to a Web site where they might encounter a number of annoyances with only 25% suggesting they might complain to a Website about the issues they found annoying! On a brighter side Interland's Summer 2005 Small and Medium-sized Business (SMB) Barometer suggested increased usage of Web sites as sales tools with 57% of US-business leaders with Web sites generate monthly revenue through online or related offline sales.
In other news, Go Daddy was announced the largest shared hosting provider in North America and later in the month the company lowered their domain name prices to the lowest ever.
