Rackspace Announces “Carbon Neutral” Web Hosting

October 27, 2006 – (HOSTSEARCH.COM) – Web hosting provider Rackspace (http://www.rackspace.com) has announced the launch of what it calls “the UK’s first carbon neutral web hosting package”. The managed hosting specialist has partnered with the International Tree Foundation - Britain's longest standing tree planting charity - to establish a hosting package deal where enough trees are planted to offset the carbon emissions produced by the package.

"Rackspace’s clients, which include everything from blue chip, multi-national enterprises to innovative start-ups, are increasingly looking for ways to minimise the negative impact they have on the environment,” explained Rackspace’s Managing Director, Jacques Greyling. “As the leader in managed hosting, Rackspace is working with the International Tree Foundation to offer organizations the opportunity to have carbon neutral hosting. This move reflects Rackspace’s commitment to offering Fanatical Support to its customers by going the extra mile."

"This is the first time that the International Tree Foundation has entered into a deal of this kind, explained the Chairman of The International Tree Foundation, Tony Warne. “Businesses have long had the option of using recycled paper in the office, but as the website and electronic communications become more important, it is encouraging that a web hosting company as significant and high-profile as Rackspace is setting this benchmark for the rest of the industry to follow."

The tree’s that offset the carbon produced by Rackspace’s customers’ packages will be planted in Pembrokshire. All trees planted will be deciduous hardwood trees, native to the United Kingdom, and approximately two years of age and already absorbing carbon to fuel their rapid growth.
