PrismTech has announced that it is part of public-private consortium that has won a national competition in the UK. The competition makes Manchester in the northwest of England the UK’s City Demonstrator for the Internet of Things (IoT). Awarded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), the competition awarded the consortium £10 million ($14.89 million) to help highlight the benefits of the IoT.
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a term used for the internet being used to managed everyday items – it connects a wide range of devices and extracts data for the benefit of the user. For instance, as part of IoT a fridge could inform its owner that it was running out of milk. A partnership between Manchester City Council, Cisco UK, the University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University, BT, MSP and a range of innovative companies such as PrismTech has been formed to deliver a demonstration of the benefits of IoT in areas like transport, energy, healthcare and the environment, culture and community.
Manchester has initiated the CityVerve project which has the aim of improving life for the city’s residents. Aspects of the project include the development of a “biometric sensor network to manage chronic respiratory conditions in patients” and a “network of sensors positioned in parks, along commuter and school routes to track the physical activity of individuals and teams”. It also includes the development of interactive bus stops that could speak to people. PrismTech will utilize its Vortex™ Intelligent Data Sharing Platform to facilitate data connectivity and data management for the project.
