German Web Hosting Provider Strato to be Carbon-free by January 2008 |
 |
September 20, 2007 (HOSTSEARCH.COM) German web hosting provider Strato plans to be carbon-free by January 2008, the company announced recently. According to Damien Schmidt, the company's CEO, the move comes as a means of negating the sizable carbon emissions produced by the companys IT equipment.
Strato has already taken measures to reduce its CO2 emissions, producing what it claims is a 30% energy saving (per customer) at its two data centers over the past 18 months. To push the company to 100% energy saving, Strato plans to utilize hydro-electric power generated by the Rhine River.
Stratom, which bills itself as the second biggest web hosting service in Europe, has partnered with AMD and Sun to investigate new energy-saving technology. In case of power outage, the company also has diesel engine generators as backup support. |
