Technology company Intel has acquired Artificial Intelligence (AI) startup Nervana Systems.
Intel, which has headquarters in Santa Clara, California, United States, is recognized globally as a producer of computer processors but is also involved in a wide range of other activities. The company bills itself as harnessing the “capability of the cloud and the Internet of Things to disrupt industries” and “solve global challenges”. It operates in 63 countries and has customers in over 120 countries. Intel’s acquisition of Nervana Systems is recognized as the company planning for a future where data centers are managed using AI.
Nervana Systems, which has headquarters in San Diego, California, United States, specializes in “deep learning” solutions that address data analysis and computation. Established in 2014, the company’s solutions optimize both hardware and software to “develop intelligent solutions for real-world problems”. The company’s “Nervana Cloud” provides a solution for users that wish to utilize deep learning models. Nervana Systems’ value also lies in its ability to optimize the silicon in its chips for AI tasks to enable AI to operate more quickly.
“We’ve always been a mission driven company,” explained Naveen Rao, the CEO and Co-founder of Nervana on the company’s blog. “Even though we won’t be a startup any longer, our mission hasn’t changed: we are here to make a dent in the world of computation. With this deal, we can now shatter the old paradigm and move into a new regime of computing. We’ll look back in 10 years and see this time as the inflection point of when compute architectures became neural. The semiconductor integrated circuit is one of humanity’s crowning achievements and Intel has the best semiconductor technology in the world. Nervana’s AI expertise combined with Intel’s capabilities and huge market reach will allow us to realize our vision and create something truly special”.
