The Planets Vice President of Facilities Wins Data Center Manager of the Year Award
May 28, 2008 (HOSTSEARCH.COM) The Planets Vice President of Facilities has been awarded the Data Center Manager of the Year Award by SearchDataCenter.com, it was announced yesterday.
The award, which recognizes excellence in data center project management, was made based on the companys green initiatives and Mr. Jeff Lowenbergs work, which will save the company more than $1 million on energy costs in 2008. Energy is The Planets fourth-largest expense.

Erwin, Chairman and CEO of The Planet. With more than 50,000 servers across our data centers, energy is our fourth-largest expense. Jeff Lowenbergs work contributes significantly to customer satisfaction, as well as to our bottom line. Jeffs award is a resounding commentary on the quality of our data centers, which our customers will appreciate.
To achieve savings within The Planet, Mr. Lowenberg conducted a six-month trial aimed at reducing power consumption and increasing data center operating efficiency. The results of the initiative were a 5% increase in critical server loads alongside a 31% reduction in energy required for cooling. According to the company, the new green initiatives were conducted across its six world-class data centers.
The Planet bills itself as the leading provider of On Demand IT Infrastructure solutions, catering for in excess of 22,000 small- and medium-size businesses and 6.7 million websites worldwide.
The company operates more than 150 30-ton computer room air conditioning (CRAC) units at its six data centers. The companys initiatives allowed four units to be turned off at one center. The cooling requirement on two of the units was reduced to 50 percent of capacity, while another nine now operate at 25 percent of capacity.
