Web Host The Planet Launches Direct Attached Storage for Dedicated and Managed Hosting Customers

October 30, 2008 – (HOSTSEARCH.COM) – Web host The Planet (http://www.theplanet.com) has launched Direct Attached Storage (DAS) for dedicated and managed hosting customers, it was announced recently. The company, which bills itself as “the global leader in IT hosting”, is offering the service to customers who require “enhanced database performance and increased file storage capacity”.

DAS is based on Dell’s MD series and available in three configurations for usage as primary storage, backup or an archiving tool. DAS units are directly attached to customers’ servers in a “scalable design” that facilities multiple connections and “daisy-chaining”; adding “one or two additional DAS units to support up to 45TB of storage”. The Planet’s DAS option features a serial attached SCSI (SAS) architecture, which provides higher availability than traditional SCSI technology.

“Websites are the lifeblood of every company that operates an online business, so having a high-speed, highly available site is critical, especially during the upcoming holiday season,” explained The Planet’s General Manager of Storage and Data Protection, Mr. Rob Walters. “Our new DAS product provides online retailers - and SMBs of any kind - enhanced redundancy with clustering and failover capabilities. DAS is an affordable way to keep critical data protected, so companies can experience peace of mind any time of the year.”

The Planet’s three DAS configurations include the Dell MD1000, equipped with up to 15 drives, the MD3000, providing “low-cost clustering and dual storage controllers for redundancy and failover”. The MD3000 is available in a dual-controller/single-port option and a dual-controller/dual-port configuration for maximum availability.

The Planet provides on demand IT infrastructure solutions and caters to 25,000 small- and medium-size businesses, managing 13.3 million websites globally. The company’s Planet Alpha division provides self-managed dedicated servers while its Planet Northstar Managed Hosting division delivers a fully managed hosting solution.
