Web Host The Planet Selects EdgeCast

December 23, 2008 – (HOSTSEARCH.COM) – Web host The Planet has selected EdgeCast Networks as its partner for its new hosted Content Delivery Network (CDN) offering. EdgeCast offers a rich media offering that enables customers to initiate and control their own CDN without “expensive capital investments” or the “operational hassles typically associated with the technology”.

CDNs utilize a network of computers that increases the number of users who can access data from a website. The solution caches web content and delivers it to users based on where they are. EdgeCast has a number of points of presence (or POPs) from which content is delivered. Its US POPs are located in San Jose; Los Angeles; Ashburn, Virginia; New York; Chicago; Dallas; Atlanta; and Seattle, and it has other POPs in London; Frankfurt; Hong Kong; Tokyo; and Sydney, Australia.

“Over the past year, we’ve received significant interest from customers who are looking for an enterprise-class, cost-effective CDN solution to more quickly deliver content to their geographically dispersed customers,” explained The Planet’s Complex Infrastructure Solutions’ General Manager, Bryce Edwards. “For customers with complex content-driven sites, a CDN solution is absolutely critical. Through our EdgeCast partnership, customers gain immediate access to hundreds of edge servers located around the world.”

The Planet’s live streaming CDN service offers a range of content delivered as Windows Media, Adobe Flash, Silverlight and /or Move. According to the company, “the broadcast quality eliminates choppiness, broadcast drops and excessive buffering. For live-event streaming, customers receive optimal performance for both their specific global region and for their “last-mile” bandwidth provider”.

The Planet bills itself as “the leading provider of on demand IT Infrastructure solutions”. The company hosts more than 14.1 million websites, catering for around 25,000 small- and medium-size businesses. The company’s Planet Alpha division offers dedicated servers while its Planet Northstar Managed Hosting division offers fully managed hosting solutions.
EdgeCast provides a global content delivery service that “gives its customers and partners competitive advantage in the delivery of digital media”.
