Three Major Companies Partner on New Cloud Platform
Three major companies have partnered to establish a new cloud platform. Taiwan-based Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. (Gigabyte) and ProphetStor Data Services, Inc. (ProphetStor) and Mellanox Technologies (Mellanox) – both with head offices in the United States – will cooperate on the production of a “reference cloud computing platform based on the open-source projects OpenStack and Ceph”. The companies will “engage in product integration and technology validation” and co-market their completed solution “through their perspective sales teams and channel partners” in 2016.

The three companies will utilize their core competencies (software-defined-storage, state-of-the-art server hardware, and high-speed networking) to “build and promote” the new platform. The project will be underpinned by ProphetStor Federator SDS and aims to deal with issues related to the storage management solution offered by OpenStack. In addition, the project hopes to enhance the functionality and performance of Ceph – a solution OpenStack users most often utilize as the system’s backend.

Ceph will be integrated with Federator to allow cloud service providers to benefit from a range of benefits. Federator offers orchestration and storage management and virtualization alongside I/O traffic modelling and elastic resource control. When used in tandem with Ceph it automatically deploys Ceph clusters through a PXE (Preboot Execution Environment) and simplifies OSD and pool management. It also offers a number of “enterprise-grade features” like “decompression, deduplication, thin-provisioning, RAID, snapshot, clone, and rollback.

“Cloud computing represents a paradigm shift for the server hardware manufacturers,” said Etay Lee, General Manager, Network & Communication Business Unit, GIGABYTE. “The hardware infrastructure is only as powerful as the software it runs, and vice versa. As a hardware company, we strive to identify first-class software vendors and collaborate with them to create tried-and-true total solutions for our customers. We are extremely pleased to have this opportunity to work with ProphetStor Data Services to broaden our reach in the marketplace of software-defined data center and together bring cloud computing to a whole new level.”
