Utah to Ask ISPs to Filter Content that Could Be Harmful to Minors

March 11, 2005 - (HOSTSEARCH.COM) – Utah Governor Jon Huntsman is expected to sign into law a bill that makes ISPs responsible for filtering content that could be harmful to minors as well as block web sites with such content.

The bill further requires ISPs to block material on the adult content registry and to "properly" rate the data.

The Utah's Division of Consumer Protection would be assigned to test the filtering and blocking under the proposed bill.

The bill is, by constitutional law however, problematic because it means ISPs are engaging in censorship.

ISPs and digital rights groups are protesting the law because ISPs don’t want to be put in the position of playing morality judge and because innocent websites may end up being blocked which will cause more problems for ISPs.
