WordPress.com, the world’s most popular blog-building site, has announced that it has added .ME as its newest domain extension option when customizing a domain name on a WordPress site. The announcement was made by WordPress.com founder, Matt Mullenweg, at the international WebFest.Me conference in Montenegro in late September.
“I am very excited about this because a name can make such a huge difference,” said Mullenweg at the WebFest.Me conference. “Dot-ME, based on the fortune of your country code, ends up sounding pretty cool with a lot of domain names.” Mullenweg also touted the fact that his company secured the first two-letter .ME domain name, WP.Me. He noted that in the year since its launch more than 1.3 billion people have clicked on the popular URL.

For WordPress.com executives and engineers, the addition of the .ME domain name extension for members made perfect sense. In a recent blog, Evan Solomon with Automattic, WordPress.com’s parent company, wrote: “Rather than adding numbers or dropping vowels for a dot-com you don’t really want, check out dot-ME and find the perfect fit for your business, your name, or just a pun you can’t stop laughing at. We’ve seen lots of creative domain names-as-sentences using dot-ME, such as About.Me and Connect.Me.”
