‘Skype for Web’ Beta Available in US and UK
A Beta version of ‘Skype for Web’, a new Skype service which is available entirely through the Internet and does not require the installation of software on a PC or mobile device, is available in the United States and the United Kingdom, with roll-out worldwide “in the next few weeks”.

According to Microsoft, who own Skype, the new version of the communication solution is a response to “hundreds of millions of people” who requested the service. “We know how critical it is for you to get to your conversations – and Skype for Web helps you get connected anytime,” suggested the Skype for Web website.

According to Microsoft, the new approach to Skype will be especially useful for those making calls on mobile phones. “Skype for Web is an important step for Skype as we move towards implementing the technology to make Real-Time Communications (RTC) on the web a reality,” suggested the Skype for Web blog. “But just as importantly, we’re doing it because the hundreds of millions of people that visit Skype.com every month told us they want to call and IM when they visit our website.”

News of ‘Skype for Web’ Beta came in the slipstream of startling revelations that the standard version of Skype could be made to crash and be rendered unusable simply by sending people a message with the following characters included: http://:
