100 Million Sites Now on the Web

November 2, 2006
November 2, 2006 - (HOSTSEARCH.COM) - With a meager 18,000 sites gracing the web in August of 1995, the web is now 100 million websites strong and counting, it was announced this week. A CNN report quoting Netcraft suggested the 100-million-website milestone took place sometime in October.

"There are now 100 million websites with domain names and content on them," Netcraft's Rich Miller was reported as announcing. "Within that, there are some that are busy and updated more often, and that represents the active sites, which are at about 47 or 48 million," he added.

According to Mr. Miller, a number of factors fueled the website boom, much of which occurred in the past two years. "The bottom line is it's much easier to create a website nowadays, and it's much easier to make money with a website," explained Mr. Miller.

Netcraft checks how many websites there are by checking domain names and provides monthly reports with details such as which operating systems they are using. Results suggest the United States, Germany, China, South Korea and Japan are places where there have been key increases in the number of websites.
