Apple’s New Irish Data Center Meets Resistance
Apple’s planned new Irish data center has met resistance from residents in the area where it is due to be built. The corporation, which is globally recognized as a leading cloud computing provider, announced details of its new data center at the beginning of 2014. Its location is the town of Athenry near Galway in the Republic of Ireland, an area noted for its natural beauty.

Apple’s 24,505-square-meter complex is one of two earmarked for development by Apple, with the other to be built in Denmark. The center will be powered using renewable energy and is expected to create 100 new jobs in the area. Apple’s investment in the new center is reportedly €850 million ($961.5 million).

Residents in Athenry lodged a formal objection against the center to Galway County Council in Ireland, citing the center's 18 generators would likely cause of vibration and noise. In addition, the objection, citing the Galway County Development Plan 2015-2021, suggested that Apple's planning application did not resolve possible issues related to traffic in the area while the center was being built. A decision on the application is expected 25 June 2015.
