Australian Web Host Melbourne IT Acquires Cloud Services Provider Uber Global
Australian web host Melbourne IT has acquired cloud services provider Uber Global. The company, which has facilities in Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney, bills itself as “Australia's first domain name registration company”. It offers a range of services including website design, email and web hosting. The acquisition reportedly cost Melbourne IT AU$15.5 million (or US$ 12.2 million). News of the purchase was reported through the Australian Stock Exchange and in the company’s 2014 financial results.

The purchase was drawn from Melbourne IT’s cash reserves and comes on the heels of its purchase of Netregistry in 2014. Uber Global – which is sometimes confused with the car sharing app Uber – offers domain registration, “bespoke cloud solutions” and white-labeled business services through its channel partners. The company purports to be Australia’s “third largest cloud provider” with a diverse range of brands including SmartyHost, Uber Enterprise, Uber Wholesale, and ilisys Web Hosting. Its estimated revenue for 2015 is AU$ 2 million (US$ 1,578,800).

“Melbourne IT’s Board sees the acquisition as a major opportunity to achieve additional scale and to strengthen the core domains and hosting business,” explained Simon Jones, the Chairman of Melbourne IT.”It also aligns with the Board’s stated requirement that such acquisitions be earnings accretive from day one.”
