Big Blue Buys Big Data Company Explorys
IBM, more often known as Big Blue, has acquired "Big Data" company Explorys. Explorys, more formerly a "healthcare intelligence cloud company" which has headquarters in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, developed a platform that was designed to "master healthcare Big Data".

Originally part of the Cleveland Clinic, Explorys was separated from its parent body in 2009. The company employs around 145 people and aims to engage another 80 staff in 2015. Financial aspects of the deal were not released, but it was announced the company's structure would be maintained in Cleveland. It was also announced that Stephen McHale, Explorys co-founder and CEO, would join IBM. According to Mr. McHale, Explorys was only approached by IBM earlier this month on this matter.

Explorys' platform was designed by Dr. Anil Jain and analyses electronic records to determine meaning in the data they contain. IBM has suggested Explorys will be used to enhance IBM's new Watson Health Cloud platform, which aims to analyze data provided by hospitals and health care systems to enhance treatments and procedures.

"As healthcare providers, health plans and life sciences companies face a deluge of data, they need a secure, reliable and dynamic way to share that data for new insight to deliver quality, effective healthcare for the individual," explained IBM Watson's Senior Vice President, Mike Rhodin. "To address this opportunity, IBM is building a holistic platform to enable the aggregation and discovery of health data to share it with those who can make a difference. With Explorys, IBM will accelerate the delivery of IBM Health Cloud and IBM Watson cognitive solutions to model and apply medical evidence and large scale analytics to data."
